James Kalm has been waiting for eight years for a show of new paintings by Thomas Trosch, and “Paintings: New and Old” doesn’t disappoint. Somehow, Thomas is able to mingle obsessive paint handling that verges on a fetishistic materiality, while portraying a kitschy, camp narrative that references both Japanese Anime and the Margaret Keane “Big Eye Kids”. The front gallery presents a selection of recent works, while the second gallery is dedicated to a series of large painterly and text based works from the mid to late 1990s. The artist also graciously submits to a brief interview regarding his use of scale, text and narrative. This program was recorded April 20, 2017.
