Lester Johnson: Dark Paintings at STEVEN HARVEY FINE ART PROJECTS

Veröffentlicht am 19.11.2013
James Kalm cut his Sunday morning reverie short to pedal his bike into Manhattan for a last chance to catch a glimpse of this select show of Dark Paintings" by Lester Johnson. As a young painter, Kalm was struck by the imagery and technique of Johnson's "Bum" paintings. Having started out as an Abstract Expressionist, Johnson veered in to a brutal figuration a decade before the likes of Philip Guston. While never receiving the recognition of the later Neo-Expressionists, he did however, have a committed core group of painting fans who sang his praise. As an influential educator (He taught at Yale for years) and despite a status as art world outlier, this work has recently begun to receive attention from a younger generation of artists who value his urgency and humanity. This exhibition features works from Johnson's "Dark" period in the early 1960s.
