Chris Johanson at MITCHEL INNES & NASH and Johanna Jackson and Chris Johanson at JOURNAL

James Kalm brings viewers along on this art journey double feature in which we drop in for an after hours perusal of Johanson’s “Possibilities” at Mitchel-Innes & Nash in Chelsea then, our two wheeled reporter makes a jag east to Williamsburg to catch the opening of “Middle Riddle” a collaborative exhibition that features works by Johanna Jackson, Chris Johanson and friends at The Journal Gallery.

Johanson is known for his colorful works and naïve sense of narrative. With both Johanson and Jackson there is a sincere vision of a less complicated more sustainable world and many pieces display a do-it-yourself craftsiness that relates to the “back to nature” movements of the late 1960s. Whimsy, fantasy and humor are all employed in expressing this version of a teenage utopia. A musical introduction is provided by Andrew the Artist (theandrewartist.com). This program was recorded April 29 and May 2, 2017.
