James Kalm is drifting through the highways and byways of Manhattan, pedaling on a Saturday afternoon while looking for a particular gallery. Though not finding the intended exhibition, your correspondent happens upon a unique juxtaposition of shows that present a pair of today’s most notable artists. Sarah Cane is an Los Angeles based painter who’s been recognized for her innovative investigations of abstraction, and what and how various elements and approaches challenge the orthodoxies of painting. “Dark Matter” also debuts her massive floor painting which “activates the 2,500 square foot viewing gallery at Lelong.

Jessica Stockholder presents sculptural works composed of bought and found objects often combined with paint and caulk. These “sculptures” operate as three dimensional paintings while also commenting on the pleasurable color and textural properties possessed by consumer products. A large structure which is the namesake of the show “The Guests All Crowded into the Dining Room” is a stage like platform that is meant to be walked on, sat on, performed on and looked at. This program was recorded September 24, 2016, in Chelsea.
