James
Kalm is out on a spring Sunday afternoon, visiting galleries on the
Lower East Side and Wiliamsburg, when he decided to turn on the camera.
Kalm starts this tour with “Life is Fine” an exhibition of textual
paintings with added glass tile and mirror, by Samuel Jablon. These
works display a painterly concern as well as text elements that balance
between the letter and the brushstroke. Viewers are then brought along
to the east end of Rivington Street for a glance at new large paintings
by Michael Berryhill at Kansas Gallery. With “Something of the Feather”
Berryhill bumps up the scale, and increases the complexity of his
compositions for this group of high keyed new works. Finally, a pedal
across the Williamsburg Bridge brings us to Figureworks Gallery for a
walk-through of “New Works” by Ellen E. Rand. Rand has been an
essential member of the Williamsburg Community for decades, presenting
the works of many local, national and international artists with her
gallery Art 101. Though working as a gallerist, and curator, Rand has
continued to peruse her own work which combines a sensual figuration
melded with distilled and subtle abstraction. This program was recorded
on April 24, 2016. A musical introduction is provided by Coyote &
Crow.
