James Kalm first saw the work of Susan Te Kahurangi King at the “Outsider Art Fair” here in New York a couple of years ago. The unique and mysterious nature of Susan’s work came like a bold out of the blue. Following her artistic career, your correspondent has kept his eyes open for more opportunities to view and learn more about this unique talent. This presentation brings viewers a selection of works from 1975 to 1989 showing a diverse use of media, and an accomplished command of drawing techniques. Though intimate in scale, these works are coloristicly rich and compositionally impressive.

Paulina Peavy could be classified as an eccentric, but in her case, this personality trait only amplified her urge to create. Attending a séance in Long Beach California in 1932, Peavy claims to have contacted a UFO named Lacamo. This extraterrestrial being, Peavy believed, guided her brush for the rest of her long career. These works on paper meld a organic process of staining and blotting overlaid with precise geometric “stencils” on which the artist added her own cryptic drawings and notations. Also included are a series of assemblage masks the artist painted in, which she believed would help her tune into the frequencies of her spiritual guide. This program was recorded September 16, 2016 on the Bowery.
