Neo Rauch | Companions | Pinakothek der Moderne Munich

Hochgeladen am 26.04.2010
Neo Rauch (*1960 in Leipzig) is the most important and intensely discussed German painter of his generation internationally. The Pinakothek der Moderne and the Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig are staging this comprehensive exhibition of his work at the two venues simultaneously. Some 60 paintings, created between 1993 and 2010, reveal an oeuvre that addresses contemporary social issues through the medium of painting.
The early 21st century is reflected in Neo Rauchs work as a period of enlightenment and disenlightenment in equal measure, as an era of global revelation and concealment, of conscious disinformation and blatant lying. Reality can be seen as a performance in which old and new pictorial motifs become intermingled, and myths unmasked and rewritten.
In its inimitable style, Neo Rauchs painting picks up on arthistorical traditions. Connections can be traced to Tintoretto or El Greco, whose paintings can be seen in the Alte Pinakothek, as well as to Max Beckmann, Francis Bacon, Joseph Beuys and Georg Baselitz, whose works are also be found in the immediate vicinity.
The title of the exhibition Companions was provided by Neo Rauch himself, and is to be seen in as broad a context as the pictures themselves. Companions can be paradigms or partners, but equally well less definable forces such as guardian angels, nightmares, thoughts and emotions.

The portrait-sketch of Neo Rauch in the beginning and the end of the video is by airamanno.
Music is by Heinz Sauer
