Stereo Love Seats… at MARC STRAUS and Luke Murphy at CANADA

James Kalm is an unapologic paint-head but, when he sees a coalescence of impulses, he’s glad, and even obligated to report it. While out on his Sunday acculturation tour, your correspondent stumbles into two galleries showing some pretty provocative takes on the state of contemporary sculpture. “Stereo Love Seats Hot Wheels” at Marc Straus brings together a selection of works that all employ the object of the chair as subject. Whether depicting a classic seated figure, used as a base for objects, or as a vessel of the void, the chair has ancient universal appeal. Artists included are: Huma Bhaba, Michael Brown, Red Grooms, Folkert de Jong, Mark Manders, Woody de Othello, Joel Otterson, Jeanne Siverthorne and Sandra Tomboloni. Luke Murphy’s “Every Pixel Bright” at Canada is a whimsical group of sculptures and wall mounted LED pieces. Riffing on various art historical precedence’s, Murphy animates these computerized constructions with zippy electrical color, and sends them slithering over a tower, a leaning plank, the interior of a hollow box as well as digital bonfires. This program was recorded June 17, 2018.
