James Kalm is perhaps the most thoroughly knowledgeable commentator on the Brooklyn art community in the world. With over twelve years writing on the scene for the Brooklyn Rail, and eleven years of his YouTube video project, your correspondent has recorded a sizable documentation of this community.
John O’Connor is one of the standouts of this milieu. Typifying a sensibility tagged “Meta-Drawing” O’Connor is one of the working artists that has changed the ideas and limitations that previously constrained this medium. Melding bold color and design with whimsical text and logos from popular products, these ambitious works are a legacy of Both Pop Art and Concrete Poetry. Kalm is assisted in the recording by the artist’s son Ronan.
As a bonus, Kalm slips into the project room at Andrew Edlin Gallery, and records a walk-through tour of a suite of diagramic paintings recording the life and death of the King of Rock-n-Roll, Elvis Presley. These paintings by the late great visionary artist Paul Loffoley are a wonderful example of this enigmatic artist’s obsessive attention to the hidden. A musical introduction is provided by G-WYLL.
This program was recorded on November 13, 2016 on the Lower East Side.
