James Kalm rushed from a panel discussion on the Lower East Side, across town to Chelsea, to bring viewers along for a walking/talking tour of the latest batch of paintings by New York Icon, Ron Gorchov. Known for his unique “saddle-shaped” canvases, Gorchov is also appreciated for his light touch and elegant color sense. There’s a natural seductiveness to the shaped supports, and the manifest process of the painting and drawing provides a distinct contrast to the physicality of their grounds. Dry hues are pushed forward, and the arched shapes imply a contrary take compared to a two dimensional coloristic and compositional reading. This program was recorded February 18, 2017, in Chelsea.
