James Kalm knows it doesn’t get any fresher than this…on his Sunday afternoon Lower East Side constitutional, he happens upon the installation of Russell Tyler’s latest show “Strange Variants” at Denny Gallery. Smoozing his way in, he gets Russell to let him do a few minutes of video (and the show doesn’t even open until the following Friday). Tyler has expanded his modes of painting from a hard edge formalism to include a dialectical soft focus, atmospheric, gesturalism, and a “drawingly” graphic expressionism, all with his signature heavy impasto and unique palette of color. Russell provides a running commentary during the installation. This portion of the program was recorded February 26, 2017

This presentation of “100 BOOTS: The Lost Picture Show” provides fans with a chance to observe a broader selection of the photographs that made up this historical work. Photos that were excluded from the original 51 post cards are shown here as are ephemera, and the complete set of cards that were sent to art aficionados around the world. Eleanor Antin chats briefly about her history, and the birth of conceptualism at the University of California at San Diego in the late 1960s. This part of the program was recorded February 24, 2017.
