Marilyn Minter Recent Paintings at SALON 94

Veröffentlicht am 31.10.2016
James Kalm is a big fan of painting, so when he;s informed of shows by prominent contemporary practitioners, he makes a beeline to check out the offerings. In this case, the work of Marilyn Minter has achieved great recognition not only for its technical mastery, but also for its conceptual and social relevance. This group of female nude figure paintings at once pays homage to this classical subject while also challenging many of the most cherished norms of taste and propriety. Using a commission by Playboy Magazine as a starting point, Minter photographed a diverse group of models, focusing on their most vulnerable parts. These figures are viewed through fogged glass and vaporous fabrics. Rendered in a licked pointillist fashion on metal panels, these paintings cast both into the photo-realistic realm while deploying painting to investigate the abstract nature of photography. A musical introduction is provided by #BuskTheGlobe. This program was recorded October 27, and October 29, 2016 on the Bowery.
