This exhibition brings together
forty works featuring one of the artist's signature characters, the
"suffer". As the icon of California in the 1960s, the lone suffer is a
stand-in for the wholesome tanned life style of the American West Coast.
However, over the intervening decades, this image, and indeed, the
"California Dream" itself has begun to reveal dark and sinister aspects
of dystopia in paradises. These impressive works on paper range in size
from a sketch book page to near monumental, and include media from
pencil and watercolor to collage and acrylic.
