A Time Before We Were Born Curated by Raphael Rubinstein at SYLVIA WALD PO KIM

James Kalm has relied on the insights and comments of an elite group of New York’s most knowledgeable and recognized art writers for much of his continuing art education and engagement with the contemporary scene. Looking back to the beginnings of the Kalm Report, the book signing of Raphael Rubinstein’s “Critical Mess Book” was one his earliest efforts. Since then, Rubinstein has continued to bring artists and their sensibilities to the public’s attention through his publications, lectures, readings and teaching. “A Time Before We Were Born…” surveys four generations of painters, all of whom were trying to tap into some more harmonious universe, a place where the past, the present, and the future could co-exist in unthreateningly glad proximity. Jan Müller (1922-1958) the senior contributor, was a student of Hans Hofmann and a staunch member of a group who stuck with figurative painting, even through the heydays of Abstract Expressionism. Half a world away, Roy De Forest (1930-2007) was a founding member of the Bay Area Funk art movement. Joo Young Choi (b. 1982) represents the youngest end of the spectrum and presents a work that might be inspired by her migration to America by way of adoption. Included are works by: Susan Bee, Katherine Bradford, JooYoung Choi, Rafael Ferrer, Roy de Forest, Paul Georges, Chris Johanson, Po Kim, Fay Lansner, Judith Linhares, Donna Moylan, Jan Müller, Archie Rand, and Purvis Young. This program was recorded June 26,2018. A musical introduction is provided by Chappy Milkshake. Links to other programs featuring Rubinstein’s work are below.
