James
Kalm has been a fan of Chris Martin since first stumbling on his work
in Williamsburg Brooklyn in the mid 1990s. Always impressed with the
artist's commitment to "grand painting," (a kind of throwback to the
golden age of Abstract Expressionism), friends and supporters watched
pensively as years went by, and Martin, refused to stifle his vision,
and fit into a commercially acceptable format. Rarely does this kind of
determination pay off in the market fueled New York art scene but…in
Martin's case, perseverance has been rewarded, and official consensus
now recognizes this work. This exhibition features three huge "Black
Paintings" from the mid 1990s and presents the works in an environmental
installation.
