After a long day in the studio,
James Kalm franticly bikes to Chelsea, trying to see a few shows before
things wrapped up for the night. Minutes after Chelae's official
closing time, on a tip from Andrew Ginzel, Kalm dashed over to West 26th
Street to bask in the work of Dona Nelson. Nelson, a longtime painting
presence in the New York scene has, over the last decade, seen a
greater critical and general response to her production. Working her
canvases from both front and back, top to bottom and using a mix of
materials, Nelson turns Abstract Expressionism inside out, and
challenges viewers to reconsider their preconceived ideas about what and
how a painting "is". A musical introduction is provided by Angelo and
Archie, and was recorded live, under the Arch, at Washington Square
Park, April 3, 2014.
