James
Kalm slipped into the Gagosian Gallery expecting to be denied video
access, and under constant security surveillance. He was therefore
surprised and delighted to be granted a free hand and allowed to record a
walk through tour of Julian Schnabel's exhibition :"A View Of Dawn In
The Tropics: Paintings 1989-1990". With this period of paintings
Schnabel employs chance, found grounds, like used tapelines, sailcloth
and Kabuki Theatre backdrops, and a renewed interest in the grand
gesture of the Abstract Expressionists and Neo-Dadaists masters. After a
several year absence, this major show presents the eclectic pastiches,
baroque excess and audacious scale that made Schnabel a prime mover in
the "return of painting" of the 1980s, and a lightening rod for
controversy. With "A View Of Dawn..." we may be presented with the
opportunity to judge the critically disparaged Neo-Expressionism for
ourselves. A musical introduction is provided by City Of The Sun
(#CITYOFTHESUN), and was recorded live in Union Square April 27, 2014.
