James Kalm was in the midst of his
Sunday afternoon art jaunt, dogging Manhattan's Lower East Side, when he
eyed this exhibition from the street. Returning a week later to
investigate, he brings viewers along for a perusal of the show. Kour
Pour is a British born artist living in LA. With this, his first show
in New York, he presents works based on exceptional rugs (some hundreds
of years old), that the artist has discovered and researched. Photo
silkscreen is used to transfer the images to linen covered panels. The
paintings are then sanded to give the works a visual simulation of
wear, and certain compositional areas are enhanced with reworking. Your
corresponded sees an attraction by many of today's young painters to
explore the legacy of Pattern & Decorative painting made popular as a
result of 1970s Feminist art, and the Pluralist trends of
Post-Minimalism. A musical introduction is provided by Risa, Angelo and
Chris and was recorded live in Washington Square Feb. 23, 2014.
