Keith Haring at GLADSTONE GALLERY Louise Bourgeois at CHEIM & READ

James Kalm is cruising through Chelsea on an early winter evening when he captures video for this double feature. This first visit on this program is an exhibition that illuminates paintings and drawings by Keith Haring from the last couple of years of his short life. These works show the shift as the artist began to move away from his trademark style of space ships, dancing dogs, and radiant babies to a more Neo-Expressionistic image, influenced by the French Figuration Libre movement. Louise Bourgeois “Spirals” at Cheim & Read is the ninth solo exhibition by this seminal artist, displaying sculpture, painting, and drawings, all with an underlying theme of the spiral. This show is also the swan song for the gallery which after over twenty years will shutter its venue in Chelsea, at the end of its run, and go private. A musical introduction is provided by Gypsy Joe Trane. This program was recorded December 20, 2018.
