Karel Funk New Paintings at 303 GALLERY

Veröffentlicht am 22.07.2017
James Kalm escapes the swelter of the studio, and makes his way to the air-conditioned bliss of 303 Gallery, to make a walkthrough tour of recent paintings by Karel Funk. This group of hyper-realist hood studies is an inversion of the usual approach to portraiture. By rendering these hoods from the back and side, intentionally obscuring the face of the wearers, these fabric forms become poetic effigies of anonymous persons. Funk’s technical facility is masterful, and his admiration of seventeenth century Renaissance and Flemish portraiture, is evidenced with the attention to the textural and surface gloss of the hoods. By locating the forms on unmodulated white grounds, the shapes, with all their folds and wrinkles, take on the features of abstract sculptured masses. This program was recorded July 20, 2017, in Chelsea.
