David Hollier Ladies & Gentlemen at SIDESHOW GALLERY

With the local gallery scene running on summer schedules, James Kalm is scooting high and low to find interesting shows that are open on a Sunday afternoon.

Sliding into Williamsburg late, your reporter caught this video five minutes before the show closed---“David Hollier Ladies & Gentlemen at SIDESHOW GALLERY”. David uses text from icons of pop culture to construct portraits and images. In some pieces, the artist delves into foundational texts of the United States, like the Declaration of Independence or the Tenth Amendment, using them to form pictures of some of the Founding Fathers, or in one case, a two dollar bill. These painting, some measuring ten by seven feet, elicit a split perception of language and picture, encouraging viewers to think about how written language might produce images and how the speakers of these words might alter their perception of the texts. This program was recorded on July 16, 2017 in Williamsburg Brooklyn.
