Kalm rounds off a night of gallery visits by bringing viewers along for
a brief, just before closing, tour of new paintings by Dona Nelson.
Although a long time painter and former Downtown New Yorker, it has only
been in the last several years that Nelson's work has began to attract
the attentions of art world big shots. The benefits of this long and
sincere practice is Nelson's acquired ability to use paint and canvas
with a playful yet total confidence. Her employment of both sides of
the painting support, sewing with multicolored string and contrasts of
paint application from wispy stains to turgid puddling show her
painterly knowledge, and fearless approach.
