Josh Smith plays a delicate balance
between the "original" and the rehearsed or repeated. Making multiple
versions of a theme, and developing new directions from slight mutations
of production, the artist embodies the humanistic derivation of craft
through his handmade reproductions. This tropical flavored installation
includes a series of palm tree paintings, and paint splattered shelves
of table top sized ceramic sculptures. Ironically, the work presents a
highly developed facility of lyrical de-skilling.
