Kalm considers himself a long time fan of the work of Mel Kendrick.
It's not only the sculptor's solid craftsmanship and commitment to
tradition, but his much more intriguing and risky conceptual approach to
the long legacy of the medium that attracts your correspondent. One
aspect of this cagy approach is discussed in the gallery press release
"An abiding theme over the years has been the role of a sculpture’s base
as not only a practical support or display feature but also as a
crucial generative component within the work itself." These pieces
invite the viewer to participate in the process of their fabrication, to
mentally transpose the positive and negative volumes, and to ponder the
means by which these structures came into being. Alan Craft was
recorded on Broadway at Twelfth Street, and provides a musical
