While checking his facebook wall,
James Kalm noticed a gallery invitation from the glamorous Patti Aster,
former partner of Bill Stelling in the world renowned Fun Gallery.
Knowing that Patti is, above all else, a connoisseur of all things Hip
Hop, your reporter decided to take her up on the recommendation, and
visit the La Mama Gallery, just a half block off the Bowery. This
program brings viewers a walkthrough tour of "1980s NOW", a two person
one night show featuring works by Savior El Mundo and Pesu. Though
there is a feeling of nostalgia, these works present two mature artists
who have won respect from the graffiti writers in the streets and the
Hip Hop musicians who provided the sound track for a generation. Pesu's
work crackles with high keyed graphic energy, while Savior pays homage
to the painters of the New York School, Pop Art and the Abstract
Expressionists.
