James
Kalm’s personal project as amateur art history buff has recently
focused his attentions on the art of the 1980s. Within this decade Haim
Steinbach is perhaps one of the most recognized figures. While working
between the boundaries of minimalist sculpture, Pop Art’s valorization
of found commercial objects, and the conceptual notions of “aesthetic
framing”, Steinbach has received the attentions of some of today’s most
sophisticated art theorists. This show presents a dramatic appreciation
of color, as both an expressive means, and as a trademarkable
commodity. Presenting wall paintings of catalogued colors and text as
backgrounds, the artist displays a collection of Pantone tins in highly
crafted display cases, along with his signature shelved objects.
