Deborah Brown This dream and other animals at BURNING IN WATER

James Kalm visits the latest presentation of paintings by Deborah Brown at a new gallery building in Chelsea, and is able to button-hole the artist for an impromptu interview. From the press release “…a lone female figure rendered in a range of settings, who alternately appears in varying affective states: aggressive, threatened, forlorn, physically daring. Her environment is a curious amalgamation in which particular elements are foregrounded – a still pool, a vertiginous rock face, an expansive beach…” All this is rendered with a freshness and urgency that dictates a facile yet knowing technique. Although seemingly contemporary, these scenes allude to themes from mythical antiquity and art history. A musical introduction is provided by Baritone McKenzie. This program was recorded February 7, 2019.
