Dana Schutz "Imagine Me and You" at PETZEL

James Kalm was all alone out in a New York art world that thought he was a crazy video stalker. In 2007 YouTube was still largely a techno oddity, and the ideas of profit, internet stars, and the power of democratic media were years in the future. Still, your humble correspondent persisted in his unique vision of presenting and documenting views of the New York scene for a world wide audience. One of his first reports was a visit to Dana Schutz’s exhibition “Stand By Me Earthman” at Zach Feuer (LFL). In the twelve years since, Dana Schutz has evolved into one of the most recognized painters on the New York scene if not the world, and the James Kalm Report has been there documenting most of her shows. Despite a controversial inclusion of the painting Open Casket in the 2017 Whitney Biennial, the artist has moved on. “The painting is based on a photograph of the funeral of Emmett Till, an African American boy who was brutally murdered in Mississippi in 1955 at the age of 14 after he had been falsely accused of flirting with a white woman” quoting from Lorena Muñoz-Alonso's, article from the March 21, 2017 issue of artnet https://news.artnet.com/art-world/dan... “Imagine Me and You” is the artist’s first foray back into the New York art scene since this public chastisement, and signals a new maturity not only in subject matter but in the painter’s accomplishments within the craft. The show is also an opportunity to see fellow attendees and gauge the support of the painting community for Schutz. This program was recorded January 10, 2019.
