Nick Cave "Rescue" at JACK SHAINMAN GALLERY

James Kalm breaks away from his studio renovation project for an afternoon excursion in Chelsea. Pedaling down West 24th Street he's beckoned by the glitter of artifacts in a window. Nick Cave's exhibition "Rescue" is a series of wall and freestanding assemblages composed of Kitsch, craft and clutter that overwhelms viewers with their opulence. "Rescue" refers to found dogs, whose effigies are the basis for these sculptures. While the dogs are nestled on antique or vintage chairs, rising above are tree-like armature festooned with ceramic birds, metal flowers and strings of beads. A spontaneous version of "So What" performed on St. Marks Place by James and Ben is the musical introduction to this program.
