James
Kalm spends a lot of time on the mean streets of New York City. So,
when he visited this exhibition of street drawings by Elise Engler, he
felt a sympathetic pang. Engler spent most of a year traveling up and
down the legendary backbone thoroughfare of Manhattan, Broadway, making
documentary drawings of almost every block. Using watercolor and
gouache, on site, she then returns to the studio and sharpens up her
compositions with color pencils. This street-strip drawing contains 252
individual sheets, and shows, like a time laps film, the changing
seasons, time of day, and even patterns of construction and development.
