Stanley Whitney "In the Color" at LISSON GALLERY

James Kalm takes an early break from the studio and peddles in to Chelsea for a Wednesday afternoon cruse of the galleries. Of course the real intention of this tour is to catch the latest exhibition by Stanley Whitney. “In the Color” is a two venue show with the first gallery displaying major paintings from the late 1990s. In these works viewers will see how Whitney started his approach to color studies with gestural “tiles” of overlaid pigments, and narrow vertical blocks of color. Also presented are a series of crayon drawings that relate to the gestural mark making of the paintings. The next gallery contains recent works which follow the distilled and simplified vision the artist is developing. Here Whitney’s color sense and bravado brushwork is fully developed with large rectangles of pure color effortlessly arranged and contrasted into stark yet satisfying matrixes.
