James
Kalm faces wind-chills approaching zero, and stays close to home,
pedaling to Vinegar Hill to capture video of Catherine Haggarty's "The
Sixth Woman" at THIS FRIDAY OR NEXT FRIDAY. Your correspondent has
popped into view exhibitions at this shoebox sized gallery from time to
time, and is always impressed with their inventiveness (turning a closet
sized part of their studios into a "gallery"). With "The Sixth Woman"
Catherine Haggarty gives viewers a walking tour as she presents seven
small gauche and mixed media paintings on panel. These whimsical
pictures, some depicting abstracted portraits of individuals captured at
unpropitious moments, seem to increase or decrease facial features in
accordance with their psychological significance. The free-form process
which allows the loose application of the media brings a de-skilled
authenticity to these renderings. This program was recorded February
12, 2016 in Brooklyn.
