Cary Smith, Peter Saul and Rachel Whiteread TRIPLE FEATURE

Veröffentlicht am 09.12.2015
James Kalm wonders the west end of Chelsea's 24th Street, and records a trio of exhibitions. Cary Smith at Frederics & Freiser, presents a cool and measured formalistic approach to his painting but… upon a closer look, observers can detect an underlying sense of whimsy and trickiness. These pictures are boldly coloristic and graphically inventive, yet maintain "high finish".
Peter Saul's "Six Classics" at Mary Boone are mischievous riffs on art historical icons, Saul's compositions seem to have taken his subjects, thrown them into a blender with a dose of electric colors, flipped the switch to frappe, and poured out the mix onto canvas. Not George Washington, Louis XIV, Venus or even Jackson Pollock are safe form these mash-ups. Rachael Whiteread's "Looking In" at Luhring Augustine features he signature casts of brick walls and other architectural elements, but these works are flattened and cast in clear resin as if the gap between a window and wall were made of solid glass. These elegantly reticent pieces stand like spiritual monuments to the spaces in between. This program was recorded on December 4, 2015.
