This is the sixth album of gamelan music from Cirebon, Indonesia presented by Gamelan Sinar Surya, a group of musicians based in Santa Barbara, California. This album is specially dedicated to Denggung, a sacred form of Gamelan that is found in the three royal palaces in Cirebon: Keraton (Palace) Kasepuhan, Kanoman, and Kacirebonan. All three Denggung sets are extremely old, a legacy from the sultanate of Banten and, according to legend, were inherited from the Pajajaran Kingdom around 500 years ago. Of the three ancient Denggung sets, only the one at the Kacirebonan Palace is still being played. The members of Gamelan Sinar Surya are working together with the Kacirebonan Palace ensemble to help regenerate this sacred Gamelan tradition. It is our hope that the tradition of Denggung Cirebon will continue to be preserved.
