Michael Alvarez "We’re Out Here" at MARLBOROUGH CONTEMPORARY

James Kalm is wandering aimlessly through Chelsea on a Thursday evening when he decides to make a dive into Marlborough Contemporary and check out “We’re Out Here” Michael Alvarez’s solo debut in New York. Hailing from the City of Angeles, Alvarez uses a wide selection of methods and medias to capture the grittier side of LA. Homeless encampments, Vocational High Schools, and family portraits are just a few of the quotidian subjects Alvarez renders in a haphazard technique on rugged plywood planks, which combines spray paint, pencil, collage and clumps of rude oil paint.
