Many companies around the world
employ Polyethylene plastic micro-beads as an exfoliant in facial
cleansers. 5 Gyres discovered plastic beads of the same size and shape
in The Great Lakes last year, demonstrating that this product, designed
to be washed down the drain, has no recovery plan and can escape sewage
treatment. Yes, this product is plastic that is actually DESIGNED to go
into our watersheds, lakes and oceans. 5 Gyres, along with our global
partners Plastic Free Seas and Plastic Soup Foundation operating within a
larger international coalition are campaigning to eliminate plastic
micro-beads from personal care products. Our targets are Proctor &
Gamble and Johnson & Johnson. Of all the sources of Plastic
Pollution in the environment, we believe this one is amongst the most
egregious and the easiest for an environmentally company to discontinue
using. BEAT THE MICRO-BEAD!
