Mimi Gross: Among Friends 1958-1963 at ERIC FIRESTONE GALLERY

James Kalm, after coming in for the opening and realizing it was too noisy and crowded to record, makes a return trip back, and captures some unobstructed views of “Mimi Gross: Among Friends…”. Mimi Gross has been a dynamic presence on the Downtown New York art scene for over half a century. This group of early works, many completed during a sojourn to Italy in the late 1950s, captures with casual yet confident bravado the friends, locations and activities that she partook in. Gross is a master colorist, and has established a considerable reputation as a pastel and crayon artist and many works on paper from her sketchbooks are included. Her large complex genre paintings record friends and family, some from her time in Italy, then back to life in the city, during this transitional period in New York. This program was recorded March 23, 2019.
