James Kalm is back in the saddle and pumping his way into the twelfth year of the “Kalm Report” and “Rough Cuts” channels. Among the challenges of this project is a never-ending onslaught of suggestions and requests for coverage. Unfortunately, your humble reporter is unable to answer most of these. But on this report, his curiosity is sparked by an e-mail appeal for consideration, and he replies by capturing some footage of the debut of the new Bushwick venue John Doe Gallery and their first show, Holis Dark Jr. Dark’s paintings are atmospheric slabs of plastic, acrylic, pigment and resin. Shaped and polished, these paintings/objects also contain phosphorescent pigments which, with the aid of the receptionist, viewers can observe glowing in the dark.
Then we travel to David&Scheitzer Gallery at 56 Bogart, and snag co-curator Jennifer Samet, on the last day of the show for a walking tour of #Pussypower. This exhibition is a response to the recent election and includes about fifty women artists, mostly painters, many proffering depictions of the aforementioned powerful anatomic feature. Artists include: Katherine Bradford, Joan Schnyder, Marilyn Minter et al. This program was recorded on January 15, 2017, in Bushwick.
