James Kalm has been working late in
the studio. So when he pedaled up to the Andrew Edlin Gallery for the
opening of "Paul Edlin: Family Business", and saw the crew ushering out
the last stragglers and cleaning up the wine glasses he thought he'd
missed out. But, pleading with the receptionist, Kalm schmoozes his way
in for a quick but concise viewing of the show. Paul Edllin
(1931-2008) is the galley owner's uncle. Suffering with profound
hearing loss, it wasn't till the age of 41 that he began formal art
training at the Art Students League. In the early eighties he began
using fragments of postage stamps as his signature medium. This
exhibition presents his production and allows viewers to witness the
development of the technical and aesthetic aspects of this artist, and
question the designation of "outsider artist".
