During his decades of dogging the
Brooklyn art scene, James Kalm has been bumping into the work of Lauren
Luloff, and it's always stood out. With "Pineapples and Teapots" Luloff
presents work with more elegant simplicity, yet maintaining her
funkster urgency. Employing a mixture of fabrics and meshes, using
bleach to white out brush drawn images, and exploring the violation of
the picture plane, Luloff brings a large scale ambition to collage.
Having spent time in a tiny village in Gujarat India twice over two
years studying traditional block printing, the artist is extending the
underappreciated legacy of Pattern & Decorative painting.
