James Kalm needs a break from the studio. And what better way to catch a breath of fresh air, and break up the daily routine than a spontaneous Friday night gallery crawl? Wheeling to the West Side of Chelsea, your reporter makes it to Ziehersmith just before closing time to check out the latest presentation by Allison Schulnick. Having first encountered this work nearly a decade ago at some art fairs, your correspondent has keep an eye open for any local manifestations of Schulnick’s work . “Hoff II” presents a selection of paintings with two impressive high keyed fantasies featuring goofy unicorns in thickly encrusted paint.
Stephen Truax has, through his personal energies and focused work, become a presence on the Bushwick art scene. “How Will I Know” is the Manhattan debut of this artist, and is a selection of intimate drawings capturing moments of “a nonlinear narrative of the shared experience of three men”, and a pair of large scale photographs documenting a public park in Berlin, where gay men cruse. The location of this show, in a raw basement, located in the bustling art neighborhood of Manhattan’s Lower East Side adds to the mysterious and covert content of the work.
