Wade Guyton Patagonia at PETZEL

POST-INTERNET-MECHANICALLY ASSISTED-CONCEPTUAL PAINTING? James Kalm made it to the West Side Thursday night without running into a rain storm, and took in a viewing of Wade Guyton’s “Patagonia” Your correspondent admits to having an aesthetic issue with “painting” that seeks to remove the hand, the pathetic paw, the artistic touch of humanity. That stated, viewers can accompany this skeptic for a saunter through this well attended show. This show, billed as eleven new “paintings”, is more of Guyton’s work using the Epson UltraChrome K3 inkjet printer. Okay, even if one stipulates that the printer is just another tool, like a brush or spray gun, your reporter still wonders how an artist can receive this level of critical recognition, which seems to derive solely from his use of this device? Aside from the “glitches in the machine” these works are mostly huge blown up photos of banal studio scenes. This program was recorded May 4, 2018.
