Marlene Dumas “Myths & Mortals” at DAVID ZWIRNER

James Kalm wrapped things up in the studio and headed out for some visual culture field work last evening. Thinking the weather would remain as the same balmy spring day, he left Brooklyn with only a hoodie. Hitting 10th Avenue, looming storm clouds from New Jersey cut open, and the shower started. Fortunately, your reporter was close enough to David Zwirner (the object of this excursion) that he could duck in, 15 minutes before closing and record video of the Marlene Dumas show “Myths & Mortals”. This is Marlene’s first one person New York show since 2010. From the Press release “Dumas is widely regarded as on of the most influential painters working today...Her paintings and drawings are often culled from a vast archive of images collected by the artist…Gestural, fluid and frequently spectral, Dumas’s works reframe and recontextualize her subjects, exploring the ambiguous and shifting boundaries between public and private selves.” This program was recorded April 28, 2018.
