James Kalm, on a regular basis,
makes it a point to visit the Regina Rex space on the borderline between
Bushwick Brooklyn and Ridgewood Queens. This show by Dave Hardy is a
great example of Regina's aesthetic vision that captures what's current
in this district. Hardy's sculptural forms envision tension and
compression that is at once threatening to explode or petrify.
Precariously balanced sheets of glass are held in check by slabs of foam
rubber and notched strips of wood. However, on closer inspection,
viewers notice that what appears as torqued and delicately balanced
forms are actually gripped by cemented masses held in a state of
perpetual solid pose.
