Due
to holiday travel, family events and an over abundance of work in the
studio, James Kalm has slacked off with his recon reports. Therefore,
to keep his viewers abreast of current happenings, he presents this
three-fer of exhibitions in Brooklyn's Bushwick. We begin with "Tales I
Know" by Sebastian Black at Clearing Gallery. This installation pares
a group of large oil paintings with long aquatint prints presented on
glass topped tables. These works are accompanied by poetic texts, that
may or may not hold narrative relationships to the paintings. Pedaling
on to Interstate Projects, viewers can catch a glimpse of two shows,
first Rasmus Myrup's "I, Scavenger of Carcasses" is a group of low slung
black reflector pools, images on glass panes, and what appear to be
chunks of ceramic fragments. The Gothic feeling, and brutally reduced
palette bespeak a Post-Modern cum Romantic nihilism. In the downstairs
gallery, Derek Frech creates a conceptually possible "quiet room" within
which digital devices like cell phones, GPS, and Bluetooth are jammed,
and potential surveillance using these same devices is canceled. While
searching the subways for more cultural manifestations, your
correspondent happened upon a spontaneous rap session at Union Square,
portions of which, are presented here. This program was recorded
December 6, 2015.
