Matt Mullican "Pantagraph" at PETER FREEMAN, Troy Brauntuch at PETZEL

James Kalm noticed an alignment of the stars and decided to checkout two shows opening the same night by Pictures Generation artists, Matt Mullican and Troy Brauntuch. With “Pantagraph,” Mullican presents examples of three bodies of work: his large sewn banners with logo-like images, huge multi-panel painting/rubbings, and tables full of collage drawings on paper. Troy Brauntuch was one of the five artists curated into the groundbreaking “Picture” show at Artist’s Space in 1977. Though originally known for his controversial use of Nazi propaganda photos as the basis of many of his drawings, this recent body of large paintings depicts images of dresses, gloves and sculpture, using the delicate velvety surface of dry pigment. This program was recorded November 3, 2016.
