James Kalm is in Chelsea on a Thursday afternoon taking in the cultural offerings, and decides to slip into the Cheim & Read Gallery for a brisk walking tour of the works of Chantal Joffe. This selection of recent works all feature portraits of women and girls, captured in intimate and casual poses. Joffe has a sensitive brush, yet wields it with a daring boldness, and confidence that at times distort the figures The simple and stark compositions employ delicate color relations with petimenti providing an insight into the layering of pigment, drawing, and erasure.
