Painting Now and Forever, Part III at GREENE NAFTALI MATTHEW MARKS 1

Painting: Now and Forever, Part III at GREENE NAFTALI MATTHEW MARKS James Kalm declares: SUMMERTIME IS HERE, TIME FOR THE Mega survey/group shows… Despite sweltering temps and ennui, your correspondent finally visited all five locations and recorded all the works in “Painting: Now and Forever Part III” at GREEN NAFTALI and MATTHEW MARKS. This is the third installment of this show which began with a co-curatorial project between Pat Hearn and Matthew Marks in 1998. It was then reformulated by Marks and Carol Greene in 2008. As with any show of this scope (it displays over forty internationally recognized artists), it’s a mixed bag, and it will be interesting to ponder what this all means in regards to painting movements, critical reception, market trends, and who’s being rediscovered? The artists in this exhibition are: Magnus Andersen, Monika Baer, Robert Bechtle, Nayland Blake, Julien Ceccaldi, Vija Celmins, Xinyi Cheng, Leidy Churchman, Whitney Claflin, Ed Clark, Robert Colescott, Matt Connors, Allan D’Arcangelo, Noah Davis, Lois Dodd, Lukas Duwenhögger, Nicole Eisenman, Janiva Ellis, Jana Euler, Genoveva Filipovic, Sam Gilliam, Tony Greene, Rachel Harrison, Luchita Hurtado, Alex Israel, Jasper Johns, Matsumi Kanemitsu, Bhupen Khakhar, Mathieu Malouf, Helen Marten, Lucy McKenzie, Rodney McMillian, Jill Mulleady, Jeanette Mundt, Howardena Pindell, Suellen Rocca, Eiichi Shibata, Gedi Sibony, Avery Singer, Sylvia Sleigh, Anne Speier, Linda Stark, Hervé Télémaque, Karl Wirsum, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, and Gang Zhao.
